The Effectiveness of Using Public Media to Promote Green Urban Development: the Case of Golden Triangle Creative District in DenverAbstract:

The Golden Triangle Creative District (GTCD) located in the south of the center of Denver has been recognized as the “Colorado Creative District”in 2016. It has also been called as the “Golden Triangle Arts District”. It is an area where cultural resources and facilities are highly centralized with complex functions. In our submitted study, we’ve used a framework to discuss the Creative District in two aspect: one is about the solid, physical aspect, called the culture of the space, the other is the fluid, live aspect: called the space of the culture. In the solid, physical aspect, we’ve discussed the design and the cultural expression of many landmarks such as Denver Art Museum and Denver Public Library. In the fluid, live aspect we’ve discussed the cultural activities organized by the district, such as artists-led program and Public Art Festivals. In fact, when we talk about “public media”we usually talk about traditional media like newspapers, radio and TV or new media like the Internet, when other kinds of media being largely ignored and less researched on. The creative district in Denver is de facto a great public medium to load and express the theme of green urban development. Such as in the solid, physical aspect we can woven such a theme into the design and cultural expressions of the land marks, we can have more exhibitions of such a theme in museums, special book regions about green urban development in libraries, also historical series of green urban development in the history center. From the fluid, live aspect, we can organize activities about green urban development to let people really interact and participate, such as having artist-led programs of green urban development and public art festivals about such a theme. From here, we can develop different methodologies such as applying the Use and Gratification Theory to measure the communication effectiveness of such activities.
